Chief of Police
Darryl Lawrence, Sr is the Chief of Police of the Zachary Police Department. He took the Oath of Office on January 9, 2023. Prior to being elected as the Chief of Police on December 10, 2022, Chief Lawrence had been with the Zachary Police Department for thirty-three (33) years. He began his extensive career with the Zachary Police Department in April of 1989 as a Volunteer Reserve Officer while working for the Louisiana Department of Corrections. He was hired as a full-time Officer in October of 1989 and graduated from the Louisiana State University Basic Training Academy in December of 1989. He moved through the ranks of the Zachary Police Department from Patrol officer to Sergeant to Lieutenant to Captain. He served as the Zachary Police Reserve Coordinator from 1995-2007. He has served as the Investigators Supervisor of Internal Affairs for Zachary Police Department. He served as Assistant Chief of Police from 2011 through his recent retirement on July 21, 2022 to run for Chief of Police. Chief Lawrence is a life-long resident of Zachary. He is married to Jocelyn K. Lawrence and the father of two (2) sons, two (2) stepsons and one (1) canine son, Rambo. He has seven (7) grandchildren. Chief Lawrence is a 1980 graduate of Zachary High School. He attended Southern University. He is a Marine Corp Veteran serving from 1980-1986. He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) National Academy and FBI Leadership Trilogy. He is also a graduate of the Criminal Justice Institute at the University of Arkansas. Chief Lawrence also serves an Instructor in several areas of Law Enforcement, training Officers across Louisiana and the United States. Chief Lawrence is a member of numerous, prestigious Law Enforcement Organizations: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Louisiana Association of Chiefs of Police (LACP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), FBI National Academy Association (FBINAA), and National Association of Drug Diversion (NADDI). Chief Lawrence is an avid reader. He spends time reading at home, at the Zachary Branch Library, at Barnes and Noble and on his camping trips. He not only has bookshelves full of books at home but boxes of books in storage. Chief Lawrence is proud of the “Little Library” at the Zachary Police Department and encourages the community to come pick-up free books.
