Due to the possibility of icing on the roadways, the Zachary Police Department is encouraging motorists to stay off area roads this evening, Tuesday, January 16th and in the morning, Wednesday, January 17th. According to Chief David McDavid, the Zachary Police Department will be monitoring the roadways throughout the night to make sure all roads are safe to drive on.
For those who cannot stay put, here’s some advice about driving under icy conditions:
Drive at safe speeds, based on road conditions, providing for plenty of distance between you and the cars around you.
Prepare to stop well before normal conditions, depending on speed.
Use headlights at all times to increase visibility.
Do not use cruise control or other control devices.
If skidding, remain calm and ease foot off the gas. Calmly turn the steering wheel in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go.
If vehicle has an anti-lock braking system, apply a steady firm pressure to the brake pedal. Never pump anti-lock brakes.
Before you head out, clear ice from vehicle windows, hood, headlights, brake lights and directional signals.
Always check road conditions.
